School Modernization Funds (HB 521)
Lakeland Joint School District has received just under $20 million in one-time modernization state funding through Idaho's House Bill 521 (HB 521). Signed into law by Governor Brad Little in 2024, this statewide initiative is a major investment in public school facilities, designed to help districts address the critical need to update and improve aging buildings.
How the Funds Work (and Their Restrictions)
This funding is provided entirely by the State of Idaho through a bond backed by state sales tax revenue. Because these are public funds, the state mandates strict regulations on how they can be used:
- What they MUST be used for: State-approved, long-term capital projects with a useful life of more than seven years. This includes structural renovations, major infrastructure upgrades, and building safety improvements.
- What they CANNOT be used for: By law, these funds cannot be used for day-to-day district operations, routine maintenance, staff salaries, short-term projects, or athletic facilities.
To ensure complete transparency and accountability to our taxpayers, all projects are subject to strict state compliance guidelines, as well as State and IRS audits.
Our Modernization Plan
Lakeland Joint School District is grateful for these one-time funds. We have implemented a state-approved plan to target our highest-need areas, enhance student safety, and protect our community's long-term investments.
Beginning June 11, construction activities will impact access to John Brown Elementary, the District Office, and nearby school parking lots, including work along Washington Ave., and this map shows designated access routes and available entry points to help guide traffic to district buildings during construction.
